चित्तोर-मन्दिर-नाशः #३४३

Event occured on 1680-03-03 (gregorian). Julian date was converted to Gregorian in this reckoning.

On 22 February, the Emperor Aurangzeb, waging a war against udayapura, went to look at Chitor, and by his order the 63 temples of the place were destroyed.

Context

After the death of Maharaja Jaswant Singh of Jodhpur in the Kabul Subah, he tried to eliminate the Rathors of Marwar as a political power in Rajputana. But Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar, in line with the great traditions of his House, came out in open support of the Rathors.. This led to war with both Mewar and Marwar during which the temples built on the bank of Rana’s lake were destroyed by his orders.

Raj Singh opposed Aurangzeb multiple times, once to save the Kishangarh princess Charumati from the Mughals and once by denouncing the Jizya tax levied by Aurangzeb. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had once taunted Aurangzeb by telling him to ask the Rana of Mewar who is the head of the Hindus for Jizya if he had the guts instead of terrorising unarmed citizens.

वेङ्कटाचले प्लवोत्सवः

The Phalguna Pournami festival is a grand five-day celebration held annually at the Swami Pushkarini. Each day of the festival features a different set of deities taken for a celestial ride on a beautifully decorated float in the temple tank.

  1. On the first day, Lord Rama, along with Sita and Lakshmana, are worshipped and taken for a ride on the float.
  2. The second day is dedicated to Lord Sri Krishna and Rukmini, who are also offered puja and taken on the float for a pleasure ride.

For the last three days, from Trayodashi to Paurnami:

  1. Sri Malayappa Swami, accompanied by Sridevi and Bhudevi, are taken out for a ride in the temple tank.
  2. The third day includes three rounds of the float, increasing to five rounds on the next day.
  3. On the final day, the utsava murtis (festival deities) are taken for a splendid ride on the float for seven rounds, attracting a large number of pilgrims. The beauty of the deities is further enhanced by the charm of the full moon, making this day particularly special and visually stunning.
