chikka-vIra-rAjendra (allegedly tyrranical) was deposed and exiled by the British; his kingdom was annexed into British India. He lived 14 years in exile; one of his daughters married jung bahAdur rANa, while another, gauramma (then aged 11 years), adopted to be taken care by Queen Victoria was converted to Christianity and married to some old colnel.

अनध्यायः

Observed on Kr̥ṣṇa-Prathamā tithi of every (lunar) month (Sāṅgavaḥ/paraviddha).

Anadhyayana on account of prathamā. Several tithis in a month are nitya-anadhyayana days, including prathamā, aṣṭamī, chaturdaśī, amāvāsyā and pūrṇimā. Manu has said that performing adhyayana on these days destroys the Guru (Amavasya), Shishya (Chaturdashi) and the vīrya of the brahma (vēda) itself (Ashtami/Purnima). Similarly, Jabali Rishi has said that Adhyayana on prathama hurts the buddhi while adhyayana on chaturdaśī hurts the brahma (vēda) itself! Interestingly, Lord Hanuman also remarks while describing the condition of Sita Devi to the rest of the vanaras and Rkshas that she was frail by nature, had further grown emaciated, owing to separation from her beloved Shri Rama, much like the vidyā of a scholar continuing his studies on a pratipat!

प्रतिपत्सु चतुर्दश्यामष्टम्यां पर्वणोर्द्वयोः।
श्वोऽनध्यायेऽद्य शर्वर्यां नाधीयीत कदाचन॥

अमावास्या गुरुं हन्ति शिष्यं हन्ति चतुर्दशी।

जाबालिः—
नाधीयीत नरो नित्यमादावन्ते च पक्षयोः।
आदौ च हीयते बुद्धिरन्ते च ब्रह्म हीयते॥
पक्षादिः प्रतिपत्, पक्षान्तः चतुर्दशी॥
तथा रामायणे हनुमद्वचनम्—
सा प्रकृत्यैव तन्वङ्गी तद्वियोगाच्च कर्शिता।

पूर्ण-स्थालीपाकः

Observed on Kr̥ṣṇa-Prathamā tithi of every (lunar) month (Pūrvāhṇaḥ/puurvaviddha). sthālīpakaḥ is an important fortnightly ritual, involving the offering of haviṣyānna to agni, with the offering being cooked on the fire itself.

तिरुक्कुऱिप्पुत् तॊण्ड नायऩ्मार् (१९) गुरुपूजै

Observed on Svātī nakshatra of Mēṣaḥ (sidereal solar) month (Prātaḥ/paraviddha).

Between the 6th and 9th centuries, in South India, there existed 63 ardent devotees of Lord Shiva, collectively known as the Nayanmars. These devout individuals, hailing from various walks of life including potters, fishermen, farmers, merchants, priests, hunters, and washermen, created devotional songs still sung by followers around the globe. Among these Nayanmars, Appar, Sambandar, and Sundarar, known for their Thevaram hymns, along with Manikkavasagar, are distinguished as the Samayacharyas or the ‘The Four’ (nālvar) revered teachers of the faith. They were instrumental in promoting the Shaiva Siddhanta philosophy and culture, effectively challenging the spread of Jainism and Buddhism. Their teachings centered around the concept that Shiva embodies love, and that embracing love for all beings and existence is essential in connecting with Shiva, the Supreme Being.

Tiru Kurippu Thondar, a washerman from Kanchipuram, was renowned for his extraordinary devotion to Lord Shiva. He earned his name by diligently serving Shiva devotees, washing their clothes and understanding their needs with just a glimpse of their faces.

Lord Shiva, wanting to bless Tiru Kurippu Thondar, disguised Himself as a poor Shiva devotee and presented him with a dirty rag to wash. He demanded that the rag be returned before sunset, threatening to perish in the cold if it wasn’t.

Unfortunately, just as Tiru Kurippu Thondar finished washing the rag, a heavy downpour began, making it impossible to dry it before sunset. Devastated by the thought of failing his service to the devotee, Tiru Kurippu Thondar dashed his head against a washing stone and wept in despair.

Moved by his sincere devotion, Lord Shiva revealed Himself to Tiruthondar, commending his devotion and promising him a place in His divine abode. Overwhelmed with joy and gratitude, Tiruthondar fell at Lord Shiva’s feet and sang His praises, celebrating the divine encounter.
