Event occured on 2000-05-19 (gregorian).

On this day, Indigenous Christian Fijians led by failed businessman George Speight effected a coup, triggering the removal of the Hindu-fijian led multi-ethnic government.

Context

  • Since the 1987 coup, many Indo Fijians had fled. In 1997, racially discriminatory provisions in the constitution were removed. A Hindu-led multi-ethnic government formed.
  • Many Indigenous Christian Fijians did not liek this. They were additionally supported by the Church and the native Chiefs.
  • The Indians had continued to neglect participation in the Army for many decades (Their demanding equal pay as Euroeans during WW2 caused the British to disband the Indian platoon).
  • Also, Indian Total Fertility Rate (which was initially higher than the natives) had fallen.

Aftermath

  • The ensuing chaos caused the military under Commodore Frank Bainimarama to effect coup and restore order. They scrapped the 1997 constitution. This was reversed in the courts. However, succeeding govrnments (via Reconciliation Tolerance and Unity Bill, Qoliqoli Bill and the Land Tribunal Bill) were lenient towards the initial usurpers.
  • In 2006, after ultimatums which were ignored, Commodore Frank Bainimarama and aides effected a military coup, clipped the wings of the Methodist Church and Council of Chiefs, and eventually rewrote the constitution replacing the race-based electoral system with a proportional representation system.

आदित्यहस्त-योगः

When Hasta nakshatra falls on a Sunday, it is a special yōgaḥ. In the cyclic rotation of time, along with the bad combinations of grahas and nakshatras that indicate the probability of upcoming difficulties, good combinations that grant benefits in multiples also arise. Among such good combinations are the Amrita Siddhi yogas of certain weekdays and nakshatras. They are Sunday-Hasta, Monday-Mrigashirsha, Tuesday-Ashvini, Wednesday-Anuradha, Thursday-Pushya, Friday-Revati, Saturday-Rohini. Good deeds performed on such yogas become especially strong in protecting and nourishing us. For instance, in Devi Atharvashirsha, it is said bhaumāśvinyāṁ mahādevī-sannidhau japtvā mahāmr̥tyuṁ tarati, that is, one can cross even mahāmr̥tyu by doing parayanam when Tuesday and Ashvini join.

द्विपुष्कर-योगः

  • 03:14→05:45

When a tripādanakṣatra is conjoined with a bhadrā tithi i.e. dvitīyā, saptamī or dvādaśī, and this falls on a Tuesday, Sunday or Saturday, it is known as a tripuṣkara-yōgaḥ. The dvipuṣkara occurs when the bhadrā tithis coincide with the same days as above, but with the dvipāda nakṣatras, which are mr̥gaśīrṣa, chitrā and dhaniṣṭhā. Like the tripuṣkara which gives a three-fold multiplier for śubha and aśubha, the dvipuṣkara has a two-fold effect.

वेङ्कटाचले पद्मावती-परिणयोत्सव-समापनम् (गरुड-वाहनम्)

The celestial wedding of Lord Srinivasa and Goddess Padmavati is a grand festival held annually in the month of Vaishakha. The beautifully adorned Parinayotsavam Mandapam, set amidst the Narayanagiri gardens, serves as the enchanting venue for this three-day event, celebrated under the moonlit sky. The festivities unfold on the auspicious days of Navami, Dashami, and Ekadashi in the month of Vaishakha, featuring Sri Malayappaswami, Lord Venkateshwara’s festival deity. Each day, he makes a grand entrance on different Vahanas: the Gaja (elephant), Ashva (horse), and Garuda (eagle), while Goddesses Sridevi and Bhudevi grace the event on separate palanquins.

Following the wedding rituals at the Parinayotsava Mandapam, a traditional ‘Koluvu’ gathering takes place, filled with the recitation of Vedic hymns and devotional songs. The Lord, accompanied by Sridevi and Bhudevi, then majestically returns to the temple.

Each day’s festivities are marked by unique traditional rituals. On the first day, the arrival of Lord Sri Malayappa Swami on the celestial Gaja Vahanam, along with his consorts on their palanquins, is a sight to behold. The traditional wedding ceremony is conducted, where the Lord is seated in the ornately decorated Parinaya Mandapam, with his consorts positioned opposite him.

The ceremony includes several traditional rituals such as Edurukolu (mutual reception), Pula Bantata (game of flower balls), and Vastra Dharanam (offering of new clothes). These customs are observed over all three days. The grand finale of the divine marriage is marked by a spectacular display of fireworks, adding to the ceremony’s splendor. The event concludes with a procession where Lord Malayappa Swami, along with Goddesses Sridevi and Bhudevi, return to the main temple.
