एयर्कोऩ् कलिक्काम नायऩ्मार् (२९) गुरुपूजै

Observed on Rēvatī nakshatra of Mithunam (sidereal solar) month (Prātaḥ/paraviddha).

Between the 6th and 9th centuries, in South India, there existed 63 ardent devotees of Lord Shiva, collectively known as the Nayanmars. These devout individuals, hailing from various walks of life including potters, fishermen, farmers, merchants, priests, hunters, and washermen, created devotional songs still sung by followers around the globe. Among these Nayanmars, Appar, Sambandar, and Sundarar, known for their Thevaram hymns, along with Manikkavasagar, are distinguished as the Samayacharyas or the ‘The Four’ (nālvar) revered teachers of the faith. They were instrumental in promoting the Shaiva Siddhanta philosophy and culture, effectively challenging the spread of Jainism and Buddhism. Their teachings centered around the concept that Shiva embodies love, and that embracing love for all beings and existence is essential in connecting with Shiva, the Supreme Being.

Eyarkon Kalikama Nayanmar, a devout Vellala from Tiruperumangalam in Ponni Nadu, was a dedicated follower of Lord Shiva and belonged to the esteemed Eyarkudi family known for its military leaders. He was deeply troubled by the news that Sundaramurthi Nayanmar had utilised Lord Shiva to resolve a personal dispute with his wife, which led him to question Sundaramurthi’s devotion and his own piety.

In response to Kalikama Nayanmar’s doubts, Lord Shiva intervened by afflicting Kalikama Nayanmar with colic and informed him in a dream that only Sundaramurthi could cure it. However, Kalikama Nayanmar, staunch in his principles, chose to die rather than seek help from Sundaramurthi. Concurrently, Lord Shiva instructed Sundaramurthi in a dream to heal Kalikama Nayanmar.

Upon Sundaramurthi’s arrival, Kalikama Nayanmar had already ended his life. This act of defiance led to a dramatic scene where Sundaramurthi, in despair, attempted to take his own life. At this critical moment, Lord Shiva’s grace miraculously revived Kalikama Nayanmar, leading to a heartfelt reconciliation between the two devotees. Following this profound experience, Kalikama Nayanmar devoted his life to serving Lord Shiva and His devotees, ultimately attaining a place in the divine abode.

अनध्यायः

Observed on Kr̥ṣṇa-Aṣṭamī tithi of every (lunar) month (Sāṅgavaḥ/paraviddha).

Anadhyayana on account of aṣṭamī. Several tithis in a month are nitya-anadhyayana days, including prathamā, aṣṭamī, chaturdaśī, amāvāsyā and pūrṇimā. Manu has said that performing adhyayana on these days destroys the Guru (Amavasya), Shishya (Chaturdashi) and the vīrya of the brahma (vēda) itself (Ashtami/Purnima). Similarly, Jabali Rishi has said that Adhyayana on prathama hurts the buddhi while adhyayana on chaturdaśī hurts the brahma (vēda) itself!

नेतोजी-शुद्धिः #३४८

(AShADha k4) - Netaji pAlkar ghar-vApasI.

After Shivaji’s escape from Agra, Aurangzeb, as a revenge, ordered Jai Singh to arrest Netaji Palkar. Netaji Palkar was then converted to Islam. His wives were thereafter brought to Delhi and also converted for him to remarry them in the Islamic way. Taking up the name of Muhammed Kuli Khan, Netaji Palkar was appointed as garrison commander of the Kandahar fort in Afghanistan. He tried to escape but was traced and trapped at Lahore. Thereafter on the battlefields of Kandhar and Kabul, he fought for the Mughals against rebel Pathans. Thus he gained the good faith of Aurangzeb and was sent to the Deccan along with Commander Diler Khan to conquer Shivaji’s territory. Here, after 8 years, Netaji joined Shivaji’s troops and went to Raigad. He peformed the prAyashchitta-s and made hindu again.
