अनध्यायः

Observed on Amāvāsyā tithi of every (lunar) month (Sāṅgavaḥ/paraviddha).

Anadhyayana on account of amāvāsyā. Several tithis in a month are nitya-anadhyayana days, including prathamā, aṣṭamī, chaturdaśī, amāvāsyā and pūrṇimā. Manu has said that performing adhyayana on these days destroys the Guru (Amavasya), Shishya (Chaturdashi) and the vīrya of the brahma (vēda) itself (Ashtami/Purnima). Similarly, Jabali Rishi has said that Adhyayana on prathama hurts the buddhi while adhyayana on chaturdaśī hurts the brahma (vēda) itself!

बोधायन-कात्यायन-इष्टिः

iṣṭiḥ is performed on this day by those following the bōdhāyana/kātyāyana sūtras. This difference happens because chandradarśanam occurs tomorrow, and followers of bōdhāyana/kātyāyana sūtras do not perform iṣṭiḥ on chandradarśanam day.

काञ्ची ३८ जगद्गुरु श्री-अभिनवशङ्करेन्द्र सरस्वती आराधना #११८५

Observed on Amāvāsyā tithi of Āṣāḍhaḥ (lunar) month (Aparāhṇaḥ/vyaapti). The event occurred in 3941 (Kali era).

This preceptor was the son of Viśvajit of Cidambaram through viśiṣṭā; like the Sun who dispels the dense darkness veiling his presence, He was born on the tenth day of the bright fortnight in the month of Vaiśākha in the year Vibhava twelve months after his father’s demise. One who was abandoned as a child in the midst of a forest by his mother herself without any possible solution to her deplorable plight, viz., widowhood, lack of shelter, servitude, insult of relatives fear of slander etc. Who, on crying at a distance was taken by the wife of Vyāghrapāda, to her home and was compassionately breastfed by her after informing her husband. The sage initiated him and imparted the ātmavidyā. Then, the adept in self control/ascetic principles, having completed studies, well-versed in scriptures, having received the grace bestowed by the Universal Preceptor (Śrī Śaṅkara) who manifested of his will before (him), and having received the mighty sacred sandals (of Śrī Śaṅkara) offered by Padmapāda appearing by the side of Śrī Śaṅkara, He (the Dhīraśaṅkara) stayed in Tilvaraṇya. The Universal Preceptor having adorned the seat of KāmaPīṭha, He wandered through the earth triumphant of having wiped off the arrogance of the adherents/scholars of rival schools in eight quarters (of the earth) and established the doctrine of Advaita. He Śaṅkarendra, having conquered easily the Kashmiri scholars Girodbhaṭṭa and others, ascended the SarvajñaPīṭha in Kashmir and though being followed by disciples to the Ātreya caves (in the Himalayas), disappeared alive in the embodied form itself. Thus, the preceptor sage spreading/showering the tenets of Advaya on this sacred earth for fifty-two years and with a desire to spread this noble path in the other world, He disappeared on the new moon day in the month of Āṣāḍha of the Uttarayaṇa in the year Siddhārthi of Kali era 3914. The sage Saccidvilāsa became the preceptor. This preceptor is turīyatīta-Śaṅkara. Some scholars mistake him to be Śrī Śaṅkara Bhagavadpāda and compile biography with inconsistencies.

उगाण्डाया भारतीयानां निष्कासनम् #५२

Event occured on 1972-08-04 (gregorian).

On this day, the crazy yet functional president of Uganda, “His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, VC, DSO, MC, CBE, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular”, ordered the expulsion of his country’s Indian (mostly Hindu) minority, giving them 90 days to leave the country.

At the time of the expulsion, there were approximately 80,000 individuals of South Asian descent in Uganda, of whom 23,000 had had their applications for citizenship both processed and accepted. A further 50,000 were British passport holders.

Context

  • British rulers had brought in Indian laborers to build railways. After the job, some 6,724 remained. Thence their numbers grew.
  • They came to be well-off relative to the natives. Asians owned many large businesses in Uganda but the purge of Asians from Uganda’s economy was virtually total. Gated ethnic communities served elite healthcare and schooling services.
  • Milton Obote’s government had pursued a policy of “Africanisation”. Indophobia was already engrained by the start of Amin’s rule in February 1971.

Aftermath

  • 27,200 emigrated to the United Kingdom. 6,000 went to Canada (egged by Aga Khan in favor of Nizari Ismailis), 4,500 refugees ended up in India and 2,500 went to nearby Kenya or to Pakistan. Kenya and Tanzania similarly closed their borders to stop refugees. UN organized an airlift when Idi telegrammed them hinting at Hitler.
  • Even those who had formal Ugandan citizenship chose to leave rather than endure further intimidation, with less than 4,000 known to have stayed. By the time Amin’s regime collapsed in 1979, it was rumoured that there were no more than 50 Asians in Uganda.
  • Some 5,655 firms, ranches, farms, and agricultural estates were expropriated (their sale having been deliberately restricted), along with cars, homes and other household goods. Aka “Operation Mafuta Mingi”.
  • Ugandan soldiers during this period engaged in theft and physical and sexual violence against the Asians with impunity.
  • There was international condmenation. United Kingdom froze a £10.4 million loan.
  • While the expulsion was initially popular in Uganda, mismanagement of the resources resulted in economic difficulties.
  • Thousands of Indians returned to Uganda starting in 1986 when Yoweri Museveni assumed power and invited them back.
