Observed on Kr̥ṣṇa-Dvitīyā tithi of Dhanuḥ (sidereal solar) month (Aparāhṇaḥ/vyaapti). The event occurred in 5075 (Kali era).

Swami Gnanananda Giri is a famous saint, who performed several years of penance in the Himalayas and performed pilgrimage across Bharatam for several decades. He set up an ashram at Tirukkovilur which is popularly known as Tapovanam, where He finally shed his mortal coils on mārgaśīrṣa-kr̥ṣṇa-dvitīyā in 1974.

अनध्यायः

Observed on Kr̥ṣṇa-Prathamā tithi of every (lunar) month (Sāṅgavaḥ/paraviddha).

Anadhyayana on account of prathamā. Several tithis in a month are nitya-anadhyayana days, including prathamā, aṣṭamī, chaturdaśī, amāvāsyā and pūrṇimā. Manu has said that performing adhyayana on these days destroys the Guru (Amavasya), Shishya (Chaturdashi) and the vīrya of the brahma (vēda) itself (Ashtami/Purnima). Similarly, Jabali Rishi has said that Adhyayana on prathama hurts the buddhi while adhyayana on chaturdaśī hurts the brahma (vēda) itself! Interestingly, Lord Hanuman also remarks while describing the condition of Sita Devi to the rest of the vanaras and Rkshas that she was frail by nature, had further grown emaciated, owing to separation from her beloved Shri Rama, much like the vidyā of a scholar continuing his studies on a pratipat!

धनुर्मास-उषःकाल-पूजारम्भः

Beginning of Dhanurmasa puja in temples and at homes. A very early morning puja is performed, typically with mudgānnam as naivedyam. Begets fruit equivalent to performing puja for a thousand years! The two ayana-s of the Sun are night and day for the Devas. 30 of these days become a month. The uṣahkāla of their day starts in chāpamāsa i.e. dhanurmāsa (although the shloka refers to the sidereal month, it appears logical to use the tropical month, owing to its association with uttarāyaṇam). Therefore, one must strive to perform uṣahkāla-pujā in this month, before sunrise — a ṣōḍaśōpachāra-pūjā. Following this, one must perform Sandhyavandam and upasthanam! The Shivapurana also extols the uniqueness of the early morning puja in this month, suggesting that one must perform rudrābhiṣeka.

खाण्डेरावेण गॆज्जलहळ्ळि-युद्धे जयः #२६४

Event occured on 1760-12-16 (gregorian).

On this day, khANDe rAv, the royalist divAn of Krishnaraja Wodeyar II, thoroughly defeated Haidar Ali in the battle of Nanjangud-Haradanahalli near Gejjalahalli Pass.

Context

  • Khande Rao came in contact with Haidar Ali in August 1756 when the king entrusted him with 50k gold pieces to be given to Sahbas Sahib (brother of Haidar) and Haidar to enable them to raise an army to defeat the Dalawai brothers who had virtually imprisoned him (the king) in his own palace.
  • Haidar rose to power under Khande Rao with the countenence of Karachuri Nanjarajaiah. In 1758, Khande Rao was made “Dewan” on the recommendation of Haidar and the Dalawais (including Karachuri Nanjarajaiah) were side-lined.
  • By 1759, it was clear that Haidar was getting more and more revenue districts assigned to himself and Khande Rao had seen through Haidar’s intention to fleece the king.
  • The Wodeyar King sought the assistance of the Mahratta army and Khande Rao wrote several letters to George Pigout, Governor General at Madras for help.
  • On 26th August 1760, Khande Rao attacked Haidar at Srirangapatna but let Haidar flee out of sentiment, with the promise that he would retire away from maisUru. Haidar did not keep his promise - he tried regrouping and attacking.

Aftermath

  • Sadly, shortly thereafter marATha forces were recalled after the defeat at pANIpat.
  • Haidar rushed to the feet of the dalvai Karachuri Nanjarajaiah - the latter was swayed and basically let Haidar act on his behalf - sowing utter confusion in the maisUru king’s troops. This ultimately led to the capture of khANDe rAv on 20th June 1761. khANDe rAv was put in an iron cage in bengaLUru, where he died next year.
