पूर्णस्वराज्यघोषणम् #९०

Event occured on 1930-01-26 (gregorian). On this day in 1930, Indians at the 1930 Congress demanded pUrNa-svarAj (rejecting dominion status). This had long been demanded by those such as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Sri Aurobindo, Bipin Chandra Pal, SC Bose and Bhagat Singh; while MK Gandhi had opposed it. Finally, JL Nehru and MK Gandhi came round to support it; and a pre-approved pledge was declared to the public.

To commemorate this, the republican constipation was adapted on this day 20 years later. A grand military parade is held in Delhi in celebration.

Besides economic complaints, the pledge states two points which remained true long after British left:

  • Culturally, the system of education has torn us from our moorings, and our training has made us hug the very chains that bind us.
  • Spiritually, compulsory disarmament has made us unmanly … has made us think that we cannot look after ourselves … even defend our homes and families from attacks of thieves, robbers, and miscreants.
