८७-तमे वर्षे फ़िजि-द्वीपोपप्लवः #३६

Event occured on 1987-09-25 (gregorian).

On this day, Indigenous Christian Fijians led by Sitiveni Rabuka effected a military coup (their second that year), tore up the constitution, discarded multi-ethnic governments and compromises, triggering exodus of Indian origin Fijians from the Island.

Context

  • Tensions between indigenous (mostly Methodist Christian) Fijian and (majority Hindu) Indo-Fijian ethnic groups (comprising an estimated 46% and 49% of the 1987 population, respectively) were high. The former were additionally supported by the Church and the native Chiefs.
  • The Indians had come to neglect participation in the Army for many decades (Their demanding equal pay as Euroeans during WW2 caused the British to disband the Indian platoon).
  • Also, Indian Total Fertility Rate (which was initially higher than the natives) had fallen.

Aftermath

  • A new constitution was ratified in 1990, in which the offices of President and Prime Minister, along with two-thirds of the Senate and a substantial majority of the House of Representatives, were reserved for indigenous Fijians. These racially discriminatory provisions were eventually overturned by a constitutional revision in 1997.
  • The coups triggered much emigration by Indo-Fijians (particularly skilled workers), making them a minority by 1994.
  • Fiji’s economy contracted by as much as 7.8% between 1987 and 1988, due to a major downturn in tourism and sugar production.
  • Further coups happened in 2000-s.

दशावतार-व्रतम्

Observed on Śukla-Daśamī tithi of Bhādrapadaḥ (lunar) month (Sūryōdayaḥ/puurvaviddha).

On this daśamī day of the bright fortnight of Nabhasya (Bhadrapada), the Dashavatara Vratam is observed. After Snanam, Sandhya, Deva-rishi-pitr-tarpanam etc., one should worship the ten avataras (of Vishnu), viz. Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Trivikrama, Parshurama, Shri Rama, Krishna, Buddha and Kalki. One should worship ten golden images (pratimā) of these incarnations and donate them to ten Brahmanas. One should fast or eat once and should also feed the Brahmanas. Having performed this vratam with devotion, one ultimately goes to the eternal viṣṇulōka, in a vimānam.

सोमश्रावणी-योगः

  • 11:52→

When Shravana nakshatra falls on a Monday, it is a special yōgaḥ. When Rohini nakshatra falls on a Saturday, it is a special yōgaḥ. In the cyclic rotation of time, along with the bad combinations of grahas and nakshatras that indicate the probability of upcoming difficulties, good combinations that grant benefits in multiples also arise. Among such good combinations are the Amrita Siddhi yogas of certain weekdays and nakshatras. They are Sunday-Hasta, Monday-Mrigashirsha, Tuesday-Ashvini, Wednesday-Anuradha, Thursday-Pushya, Friday-Revati, Saturday-Rohini. Good deeds performed on such yogas become especially strong in protecting and nourishing us. For instance, in Devi Atharvashirsha, it is said bhaumāśvinyāṁ mahādevī-sannidhau japtvā mahāmr̥tyuṁ tarati, that is, one can cross even mahāmr̥tyu by doing parayanam when Tuesday and Ashvini join.
