आऱुमुख-नावलर्-गुरुपूजै #१४६

Observed on Maghā nakshatra of Vr̥ścikaḥ (sidereal solar) month (Prātaḥ/paraviddha). The event occurred in 1879 (Gregorian era).

Event

On 5 December, at his residence, माहेश्वर-s gathered to recite the द्राविड-स्तोत्र around him, knowing that the hour of his शिवपदप्राप्ति was fast approaching. Sporting रुद्राक्ष-s all over his person, sipping गङ्गाजल and having applied the sacred ash from चिदम्बरम्, मदुरै, काशी and तिरुचॆन्दूर्, he looked like a veritable शिवगण-नायक, who was merely in human guise on earth. At around 9 PM, he lifted his weak hands, one last time, to place upon his head as a humble salutation to the Supreme God and then gave up his last breath.

Context

Śrī Nāvalar’s last public discourse was on आडि-स्वाति of the Tamizh calendar in 1879, the गुरुपूजा of श्री-सुन्दरमूर्ति-नायनार्, the friend of महादेव. His health began to deteriorate over the next few months. The daily आत्मार्थ-पूजा he would do with so much devotion; he was unable to do it any longer and a शिवाचार्य from वेदारण्यम् would do it on his behalf.

Major celebrations

In सिंहपुरी, the गुरुपूजा of आऱुमुख-नावलर् (the day he attained शिवपद) is done without fail at शॆण्पक (चम्पक) विनायक temple every year on मघा-नक्षत्र of कार्त्तिका-मास as per the Tamizh calendar.

अनध्यायः

Observed on Kr̥ṣṇa-Aṣṭamī tithi of every (lunar) month (Sāṅgavaḥ/paraviddha).

Anadhyayana on account of aṣṭamī. Several tithis in a month are nitya-anadhyayana days, including prathamā, aṣṭamī, chaturdaśī, amāvāsyā and pūrṇimā. Manu has said that performing adhyayana on these days destroys the Guru (Amavasya), Shishya (Chaturdashi) and the vīrya of the brahma (vēda) itself (Ashtami/Purnima). Similarly, Jabali Rishi has said that Adhyayana on prathama hurts the buddhi while adhyayana on chaturdaśī hurts the brahma (vēda) itself!

शिवराजः सप्तकोटेश्वर-मन्दिरनिर्माणम् आरभते #३५७

Event occured on 1667-11-23 (gregorian). Julian date was converted to Gregorian in this reckoning.

On 13th November 1668 (in the same month as the raid on bArdesh, Goa), Shivaji commenced the construction of the temple of Shri Saptakoteshvara at Narwe.

Formerly the temple of Shri Saptakoteshvara, the family deity of the Kadamba dynasty that ruled over Goa in the 12th century, was in the village named Narwe (Naroa) in Divadi, a tiny coastal island. It was destroyed by the Muslims and the stone image of the deity was hidden by the devotees in the embankment of a field.

When Goa came under the sway of Vijayanagar, Madhava, a minister of that Empire, built a new magnificent temple at the same place and reestablished the deity. This, too, was destroyed in 1540 – this time by the Portuguese - along with many other temples. They built a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora Candelaria in its place.

Some remains of the ancient temple could still be noticed in the chapel. The image of the deity was smuggled out of Goa and a temple was built in another village within Adilshahi territory also named Narwe (Naroa) in the district of Dicholi, opposite the one in Divadi. This temple, it seems, was in a very dilapidated condition.

Shivaji was now building a new one at that site which he perhaps intended would serve as a beacon of hope for his Hindu brethren in Goa. This was all that he could do for them at the moment.
